This translation was organized during a field trip to Gabon in 1999. Francis has said the book looks better in English, and it has become a cult classic.

We wrote this book, a review for the HSC (Higher School Certificate Cambridge exam), primarily to shift the subject matter more towards the Malaysian context, using examples of plants from Malaysia (rather than the anatomy of the English oak!), and it affected the entire biology curriculum.
